S2E63 - Rudolf Steiner Part 2 - Occult Mysticism

This episode concludes our discussion of Rudolf Steiner's--How to Know Higher Worlds. We explore more practical instructions for how to train in the "occult sciences," which surround increasing our capacity for empathy and systematically tearing down the psychological boundaries of identity...between yourself and others, between subject and object, between God and its creation. The ultimate goal of this striving took me by surprise. Steiner is not teaching ritual magic, he doesn't point to gods or demons, but rather points to the God-within. Steiner lays out a pattern of behavior and thinking that leads inevitably to an ego death and mystical enlightenment. It is endogenous. Lying in wait for each of us to become ready for its manifestation.

S2E61 - Rudolf Steiner - How to be a Mystic

In this episode we introduce the early 20th century philosopher and occultist--Rudolf Steiner. We explore his book "How to Know Higher Worlds" and compare and contrast his methods with those of Carl Jung. Steiner and Jung were contemporaries of each other and, while they likely never encountered each other, came to eerily similar conclusions from wildly different perspectives. If you're looking for instructions on how to become a mystic, you came to the right place.

S2E60 - Gandalf the Red Part 7 - Being and Becoming

In this episode we return to Jung's mystical "Red Book" and recount 2 of his "visions." We meet (and kill) a destitute man and then chat with a monk in the desert. Through these experiences Jung comes to realize he exists as two worlds--one conscious, the other unconscious, one individual, the other collective, one as being, the other becoming. He can no longer hold on to the one-sided image of himself and of God that we wants to. He can no longer think of them as all good or as only its highest manifestation...he must complete the picture, embrace the whole and recognize that he is a "piece of the darkness" too.

S2E59 - Vedanta, Murder and Worship

In this episode Daniel Torridon of the Onion Unlimited podcast joins the Two Tongues. Daniel gives us a lesson in Vedanta Hindu philosophy; we talk non-dualism and get Kyle's take on it. At some point Kyle asks the question: "Can murder be worship?" and we were off to the races. We wrap up with a rapid-fire game of "Before they were Jewish" by comparing Biblical stories to their older, ancient Mesopotamian versions.

S2E58 - Swedenborg and Spiritual Influx

In this episode we explore the 18th century scientist and mystic--Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg led an interesting life as a respected philosopher and scientist before changing to theological themes in his later life. This change was attributed to a mystical experience, wherein, Swedenborg claimed, he was given the ability to live simultaneously in the Natural and Spiritual worlds. Swedenborg speaks to angels, travels to heaven and is taught the mysteries of God and being. His mystic vision parallels that of Sir Humphry Davy who was born only 6 years after Swedenborg's death. Both men saw the spiritual "heaven" and the "angels" in the material expanse of space and in the stars and planets.

This episode originally aired as a live stream on the Onion Unlimited Podcast. Special thanks to Daniel Torridon for picking the topic and for the conversation. We talk "Hermeticism"...but what the hell is that exactly? Well, it is body of writing, some ancient and some less so, attributed to the ancient Greek god--Hermes. More correctly, they are attributed to Hermes Trismegistos; Hermes the "Thrice Great." He was a union of the Greek Hermes and the ancient Egyptian God Thoth, who the Hermeticists believed were one-in-the-same. The writings are strange and esoteric; full of symbols and abstractions. They've been used and highly regarded by philosophers, artists, mystics, alchemists and even occultists. Intrigued? Of course you are :)

In this episode we tackle the chapters of von Franz "Archetypal Symbols in Fairytales" that describe the image of "the mountain." We hear fairytales from across the world that take us up and deep into the holy mountain where the gods reside, or the spirits live. We see holy mountains as a symbol of the unconscious the world over, Ararat, Sinai, Olympus, Fuji, and on and on it goes. Even in the pyramids, ziggurats and stepped temples of Mesoamerica, we see the symbol of the mountain, albeit man-made. Ascending the mountain is a spiritual quest; we risk all to climb towards heaven, to meet God and are rewarded for it. What is this treasure you ask? Listen to find out...
